A special situation exists when a subject seems not to agree with its predicate. For instance, when we want each student to see his or her counselor (and each student is assigned to only one counselor), but we want to avoid that "his or her" construction by pluralizing, do we say "Students must see their counselors " or "Students must see their counselor "? The singular counselor is necesssary to avoid the implication that students have more than one counselor apiece. Do we say "Many sons dislike their father or fathers "? We don't mean to suggest that the sons have more than one father, so we use the singular father. Theodore Bernstein, in Dos, Don'ts and Maybes of English Usage , says that "Idiomatically the noun applying to more than one person remains in the singular when (a) it represents a quality or thing possessed in common ("The audience's curiosity was aroused"); or (b) it is an abstraction ("The judges applied their reason to the problem"), or (c) it is a figurative word ("All ten children had a sweet tooth ") (203). Sometimes good sense will have to guide you. We might want to say "Puzzled, the children scratched their head" to avoid the image of multi-headed children, but "The audience rose to their foot" is plainly ridiculous and about to tip over.
Be sure to choose only the arguments you will be able to illustrate and develop in your essay. Feel free to revisit your thesis statement and rewrite it while you work on your paper and want to add or change something. If you decide to use the thesis statement suggested above, you will need to write one paragraph discussing a relationship between literacy of population and economic development of the country. Another paragraph should shed light on the current situation in Africa. Try to find the latest stats on education and economy in Africa. Numbers often speak louder than words when you need to illustrate your point and to persuade readers to share your position. The third paragraph should address the question of humanitarian aid and the attitude of the locals to it. Finally, make sure to repeat your thesis statement in the conclusion part, but use different wording.
In a 1993 interview with The Washington Post, about the time the Clinton health care plan was being formulated and the thesis was being sealed, the first lady characterized her college writing as an argument against big government, supporting Alinsky's criticism of the War on Poverty programs. “I basically argued that he was right,” she told the newspaper. “Even at that early stage I was against all these people who come up with these big government programs that were more supportive of bureaucracies than actually helpful to people. You know, I've been on this kick for 25 years.”
